OBD II Trouble Code P0517: Battery Temperature Sensor Circuit High

OBD II Trouble Code

What does an OBD-II P0517 code mean?

P0517 means there is an issue with the speed controls and idle control system, likely due to a defective battery or faulty electrical wiring.
Code P0517 is set when the voltage at the sensor stays above a set level (usually around 5V) for too long a period. This code is generally considered to be an electrical circuit issue.
To read the battery temperature, a 5-volt reference signal is sent from the PCM to the battery temperature sensor, which is grounded through the sensor return circuit. When the battery temperature increases, it decreases the sensor resistance, and the ECM will receive a higher voltage signal. When the battery temperature drops, the voltage signal sent to the ECM decreases.

What causes the P0517 code?

  • A faulty or damaged battery temperature sensor
  • Battery corrosion
  • Damaged, defective, open, or shorted electrical wiring and related connectors
  • Engine overheating

What are the symptoms of the P0517 code?

  • The engine may experience surging
  • Warning light on the dashboard
  • Overheating
  • Battery voltage may be low

How to diagnose the P0517 code?

  • Use an OBD-II scanner to check for a stored P0517 trouble code
  • Inspect all wiring and related electrical connectors for signs of damage
  • Test the battery to ensure it is fully charged
  • Inspect and test electrical circuits related to the battery temperature sensor for signs of damage
  • Test battery temperature sensor for a ground signal and test for a system voltage signal
  • Test resistance of the battery temperature sensor

Common mistakes when diagnosing the P0517 code:

A common mistake is to actually replace the battery itself when you see a P0517 code when the problem is typically related to the sensor in the battery tray.

How dangerous is the P0517 code?

A P0517 code can lead to unsafe driving conditions for the driver. When this code appears, it is recommended to immediately take your vehicle to your local service center or mechanic for repair and diagnosis.

How to fix the P0517 code?

  • Repair any damaged electrical wiring or related connectors
  • Repair any damaged electrical circuits
  • Replace the battery temperature sensor
  • Recharge or replace the battery
  • Clear all codes, test-drive the vehicle, and rescan to see if any codes reappear

Additional information related to a P0517 code

Because the battery temperature sensor also relates to activating the heated oxygen sensor and evaporative emissions systems, codes related to both may accompany a stored P0517 code.
